At the beginning of October Mr SV and I took Monty on his very first holiday to the Puffins Nest in Hartland, Devon. I wouldn’t want to holiday without him (Monty, not Mr SV) and was delighted that Canine Cottages help match pawrents and their pups with the perfect holiday destination. When Monty was crowned a runner-up in the Canine Critic competition, he was kindly gifted a voucher to put towards a break. It was the impetus I needed to enjoy our first dog-friendly break.
How does Canine Cottages fit with the So Victoria ethos?
I hasten to add that I was not asked to blog or share our getaway. I chose to capture our stay to help other pawrents enjoy beautiful stays of their own. I am a devoted fur-momma and it’s important to me to help others live a fulfilling life with their pets. At So Victoria I am passionate about reducing my impact on the world and one of the easiest choices I can make is to not fly. I hope to highlight the wonderful holiday spots around the UK.
Choosing our Canine Cottage
We knew we wanted to head south to enjoy some scenic dog walks and we chose early October so that all the beaches would be dog friendly and the temperatures would be Monty friendly. (Staffies are absolutely not built for heat or cold!)
We used the Canine Cottages search feature to narrow our choices to the Devon area in our chosen window. There were a few properties that fit the bill but The Puffins Nest was the THE one!
The Puffins Nest, Hartland
You know I love bijoux living! I love snug, cosy nooks and The Puffins Nest offered the most perfect boutique bijou stay. The coastal cottage is a converted grain store and is part of the Joules Collection. The specially selected properties have been styled by Joules in their statement style.
A Warm Welcome
The nest is set on a farm, nestled between buildings and the sat-nav directed us straight there. The welcoming view was breathtaking! There is plenty of parking and after absorbing that view a little longer we headed inside to check out our holiday stay. On arrival we were greeted with a basket of local goodies to sample during our stay, it was such a lovely touch and was very much appreciated. We certainly enjoyed munching through the snacks on our cosy evenings in.
What a Stunner
The photographs do not capture the magical feeling of the nest. Nestled in a beautiful walled garden, the cottage was warm and cosy, its fairy lights twinkling through the window as we went inside.
The space has been designed with the perfect layout. Every inch has been maximised to create a luxurious and spacious stay. The ground floor is home to a full mini kitchen with Smeg appliances and everything you need to cook during your stay. The living area is home to a comfy and spacious sofa, a library of books, local information and games and a table and chairs.
The space is heated with an instant heat electric panel heater and a log burner set into a hearth made with broken crockery from the farm. It was these stunning touches that make the Puffins Nest so very special
The bathroom was dreamy, a natural stone floor was teamed with the deepest of roll-top baths, towel warmer and gorgeous artisan touches like the stunning paper mirror. I spent every evening soaking in the bath and it was the loveliest space to enjoy!
Joules Bedding and Coastal Accents
The mezzanine level is home to the picture-perfect coastal bedroom. The Joules bedding looked stunning with the driftwood headboard and coastal touches. There is plenty of storage, with under-bed space and a large chest of drawers to stash you holiday outfits. All in all, it was hard to believe that such a beautiful stay was dog friendly.
A Perfectly Placed Puffins Nest
The location of the nest is perfect. Right on the coast, we were able to walk Monty along the cliffs each morning. It was just a ten minute drive to the village of Hartland which had lots going on. There are shops to pick up anything you might need, several pubs and restaurants, a lovely fish and chip shop and even a farmers market.
Clovelly and other days out
Being right on the border means that the Puffins Nest is in an ideal spot to enjoy both Devon and Cornwall. Everyday we spent the day exploring all the local days out. Everywhere we were was not just dog friendly, it was dog embracing. Monty was called in to many shops for a quick fuss and the response to him really warmed my heart, he was truly welcome.
I’m going to write another blog post detailing everywhere we went from a pawrents point-of-view but he never left our sides. He enjoyed hanging out with surfers at Croyde, loved the sand dune strolls at Saunton Sands. Fish and Chips and festoon lit wanders were happily enjoyed at Westward Ho! too.
Clovelly village was completely dog friendly, Monty had the pleasure of meeting some of the gorgeous Clovelly cats and touched noses with a very handsome donkey. Bude was a beautiful day out with so much dog-friendly space to enjoy. We even squeezed in a trip to see Hartland lighthouse which was a beautiful spot to watch the sunset together, even though we couldn’t spot the shipwreck.
We all had the most amazing break, we saw so much, relaxed more than I thought possible and most importantly, we were all together. It was a dream. When it was time to come home, tears were shed! I didn’t want to let go of the magical feeling of the Puffins Nest. We took one last walk past the ducks to the cliffs and soaked up enough magic to keep us going until we return because we definitely will be going back!
