Confession time. I’ve not had a facial for over five years. Whilst I’m being honest, I’m going to also admit that I’ve never loved facials. You see, I knew that facials were supposed to be so good for my complexion. But, actually, I’d never really seen or felt anything that made me feel like any real improvement was happening. I do struggle with congested skin and over the years, I sampled all kinds of facials and yes, each one felt lovely and relaxing. Yet, no results were ever achieved that couldn’t be produced at home with a couple of hours and the contents of my skin-care bag. That was until I was invited to EF Medispa in Edgbaston. I mean it! This was hands down the best facial of my life and let me tell you why.
EF Medispa Edgbaston
EF Medispa is an incredibly prestigious and award-winning chain of medical spas and in October of 2017, Birmingham became home to their latest branch. The team invited me along to give an honest review of the clinic and their Biologique Recherche facial. I pride myself on honest reviews and was really looking forward to ‘dipping my toe’ back into facials. Could I be convinced that a facial is more than a nice massage for the face?
My Skin Woes
I struggle to keep my skin under control, combination patches, enlarged pores and hormone fuelled congestion are my demons. I have to work hard to keep my skin as smooth as I can and even though it’s currently the best It’s been for nearly a decade. I don’t yet feel comfortable enoughto add a little highlighter into my make-up. I’m all about matte finish to hide the uneven texture around my temples and cheeks.
I was aware of Biologique Recheche, their iconic Lotion P50 is the holy grail product for top dermatologists around the globe. The brand ethos is centred around intelligent skincare that utilises pure, raw and highly concentrated ingredients that create results. As the exclusive Midlands stockist of Biologique Recherche, the products and treatments at EF Medispa spa are always in very high demand.
The EF Medispa Clinic
The clinic is beautiful, set in the Calthorpe Estates in the heart of Edgbaston Village, the exterior offers pristine period architecture that really invites you inside. The team greet you warmly, sit you in the waiting area and serve a drink of your choice whilst you complete a brief, yet detailed questionnaire that covers health conditions, medications and basic skin questions.
Then I met with Sarah, the clinics treatment co-ordinator who spent about fifteen minutes with me talking through my skin concerns, current regime and guided me though what to expect during the treatment.
It was so good to have a one-to-one opportunity to ask questions and really be honest about my concerns and battles. Sarah explained that my facial would be tailor-made for my skin as it is, not as it can be. As I was in the throes of a hormonal blemish flare, I wondered if anything could be done at all.
Sarah briefed my consultant, Beth, so that I wasn’t repeating myself again and I was then escorted to the treatment room. The facial was then tailored specifically to my skin to create a customised experiance. The room was warm and relaxingly lit and Beth really put me at ease as I prepared for the facial to begin.
Cleanse and Welcome Massage
Beth asked if I was happy to have all my make-up removed and I was. (You can opt to leave your eye make-up in place if you would like.) My make-up was gently removed and I was then treated to a welcome massage from décolletage to hairline. The massage relaxed away my stressful day and left me prepared for the treatment stage to begin.
My treatment stage started with an application of lotion P50w, to exfoliate my skin so that the products used in the following stages would penetrate the skin. The massage stage uses the highest concentrations of active ingredients in the form of ‘boosters’ that are worked into the skin in a very unique way. The massage technique stimulates elastin and collagen whilst defining and lifting the face. The facial is delivered in halves (one side of the face at a time.) Not only does this allow you to compare the results half way through, but the products can also be tailored for the different sides of your face. (I have more congestion on one side of my face.) The massage was really nice and included gentle flicks, pinches and pressing. When I saw the side by side comparison, I could clearly see that my brow and eye area had lifted and my cheekbone was much more defined.
A mix of two masques were applied to the treated side of my face and Beth repeated the massage and boosters to the right side of my face and then finished with the masque. After that was gently cleaned away, a customised serum blend was then pressed into my skin followed by moisturiser and eye cream.
Beth poured me a drink and in a really relaxed and calm way, talked through the treatment and wrote out a skincare prescription based on the products used. I really appreciated the slow ‘recovery’ and gentle aftercare, I didn’t realise how much I needed it. I was guided back to the clinic entrance and Sarah asked how I’d got on and checked all was well. The next day, I also received a lovely follow-up email to see how my skin felt and to ask any questions. This level of customer care was incredible.
I knew facials were a lovely relaxing treatment, but, there’s relaxing and then there’s stumbling through the city in a daze of facial-induced relaxation like I have never known. I actually floated home.
So did my skin look, feel or behave any differently? Without a doubt, yes. Firstly, it felt incredibly soft, and although my skin had a lustre to it, there was no surface oil or grease from product or from my own skin. When I got home, I had a really good inspection and my pores were noticeably more refined and the lift that I saw on the treatment bed was still there hours later. For the next few days my skin produced a lot less oil, I didn’t have to re-powder during the day. Which doesn’t happen, especially when it’s warm. My hormonal breakouts and congestion were visibly less inflamed too, which really excited me. The lift, anti-inflammatory, pore refinement and oil-balance effects started to wear off after about three days.
What I was left with was hope. Hope that maybe I could improve my skin even further with well-timed facials that actually work! I’ve never felt anything like this with the many other facials I’ve tried – EF Medispa is definitely the best facial in the Midlands.
