There is nothing more relaxing or as restorative as a spa day. Last week I was invited along to Amala Spa at The Hyatt Regency in Birmingham to take a peek at the beautiful facilities and relaxing treatments on offer, followed by Their delicious champagne afternoon tea in the Aria restaurant.
I love urban spas, the whole of idea of being enveloped in the calm and serene, yet still within the heart of a bustling metropolis. Amala Spa and Club offers just that. Set within the lower floor of the Hyatt Regency in Birmingham, the spa offers a gym, luxury treatment rooms and club, comprising a pool, sauna, steam room, whirl pool and cold plunge pool. Just what I needed for a day to unwind and rejuvenate for the busy few months ahead.
A Warm Welcome
The welcome was wonderful at the hotel in general, from the valet to the desk staff everyone is genuinely keen to ensure you have a lovely stay, and I was kindly guided down to Amala Spa. The atmosphere is everything you need and want from a day of zen; peaceful and calm, with an attentive team.
I chose a deluxe manicure as my treatment for the day. As a photographer, my hands and nails are under constant abuse and although I’m pretty good at giving myself a quick slick of polish. I was really looking forward to a little hand and nail tlc.
The manicure lasted about 30-40 minutes and included a shape, cuticle work, a hand scrub, massage and polish of my choice. The massage was really relaxing and the beauty team were really easy to talk to – no awkward ‘are you going on holiday?’ discussions here. That’s really important to me and the relaxed vibe just allowed me to enjoy every second of my treatment.
The spa used Orly polish as their range and the array of colours were vast and all really appealing. I chose ‘Lift the Veil’, a light pink creme shade. Light colours really do show up the quality of a lacquer and the skill of the beautician. My polish was streak free and really glossy too. I was really pleased with the result. As this shade was part of the ‘mini-mani’ range, I also got to take home a mini polish.
The changing facilities were warm and clean, the staff provide a fresh robe, towel and slippers and run you through the the digital locker system. There is complimentary fruit infused water and toiletries and well lit areas to dry your hair and apply your skincare and makeup.
The pool area was bright and filled with plants and a variety of loungers, I didn’t get to test these out, but lots of guests looked very relaxed as they snoozed or read in the sunlight. I headed straight for the whirl pool. I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and there is absolutely nothing more wonderful than a warm whirl pool! It was heavenly and I have to admit that I did spend all my time soaking in the perfectly heated water as it bubbled around me. (Does that make me a terrible blogger?) I would love to go back to try out the steam room and do a few lengths in the heated pool too. None the less I got out feeling incredibly relaxed and pampered and ready for afternoon tea.
Champagne Afternoon Tea in the Aria Restaurant
Aria is the Hyatt’s signature restaurant, and we were treated to the champagne afternoon tea, I opted for the vegetarian selection. Aria’s pastry chef is incredibly passionate, and the afternoon tea is a real treat for the taste buds, especially for those with a sweet tooth.
Fresh egg mayonnaise with cress.
Roast Courgette with hummus.
Cheddar cheese with picallili
Heritage tomato with basil pesto
Mixed berry creme patisserie tart
Gin, elderflower and apple syllabub
Coconut, blackberry and lime sponge
Rosemary and dark chocolate delice
A selection of plain, fruit and lemon with poppy seed scones served with clotted cream and house-made lemon curd and jams.
I’ve enjoyed lots of afternoon teas, but I thought the complexity of flavour in the sweet dishes were incredibly decadent and special. I was also pleased to see a vegan option that in no way lacked in variety or luxury.
The sandwiches were fresh and tasty with a good bread to filling ratio. The cougette with hummus was particularly good.
Wow! The selection of fancies were above and beyond, and because the flavours were all so different it meant I could happily sample them all. I have to say, the grapefruit cheesecake was my favourite. I’m not normally a fan of cheesecake, but the cake was set on a spoon; the cream cheese was perfectly flavoured with grapefruit zest and nestled next to a lemon shortbread base. Finished with candied grapefruit and a chocolate butterfly, it was a joy to look as well as eat.
As a lover of citrus, the lemon with poppy seed scone was my top choice, served with a zingy yet creamy curd and a soft mound of clotted cream. Simply delicious!
