This is my second visit to the Amala Spa and Club and I think it’s my favourite city-spa spot. I adore the light and airy pool, the beauty expertise, the food and the incredible Amala team.
So when they asked me to join them again to sample the new strawberry-themed afternoon tea and enjoy an education in skin analysis from Comfort Zone, I couldn’t say no. In-fact, I can’t think of anything I needed more than a day or R and R. Let me tell you all about it!
Let’s go Poolside
I started the day with some poolside relaxing. I have been incredibly busy lately and felt burnt out and quite tense. Spending a bit of time lounging in the sunlight with a newspaper was the perfect way to change gear. I don’t find it easy to ‘switch off’, but this did the trick. I find a lot of city spas go for a ‘womb’ vibe, with dark colours and no windows. Amala is bright and sunny, with the pool encased within a conservatory style space that I love. It’s like being on a holiday for a day and we can always do with that!
A few lengths of the pool and soak in the jacuzzi and I was starting to feel ready for food. My brother, James, came with me (I exploit him for pictures.) and he spent the morning making the most of the gym. He loves weight training to unwind and spent a few hours challenging himself with a session of medicine balls, cable machine and smith machine.
Strawberry Afternoon Tea
I love afternoon tea, it always feels so decadent and as I have an enthusiastic sweet-tooth, I always look forward to the cakes, fancies and scones. The Aria restaurant is beautiful! It’s so restful and bright, flooded with natural light from the glass ceiling and twinkling trees.
But first, tea
To start, Prosecco was served whilst we perused the incredible tea menu. We both selected a peppermint infusion to complement the strawberry themed spread. I opted for the vegetarian version and James chose the traditional meat-based tea. Have a look at the full afternoon tea menu to get all the details.
Three tiers of deliciousness arrived and I wasted no time in munching my way through. Everything was delicious but I particularly enjoyed the bite-sized mushroom and leek quiche – they were exceptionally tasty!
Aria’s chefs always make the best scones I have ever tasted! the fine, crumbling texture and perfectly balanced flavour are the highlight of the menu. I could happily munch my way through as many as you can put in front on me. They’re so good that you can skip the jam and cream if you were so inclined. Did I mention they offer a chocolate variety? You have to try them, they’re D-I-V-I-N-E.
Spa day sweet treats
Oh, the sweet treats! The seasonal fancies were strawberry themed and each more yummy than the last. My favourites included the yuzu and strawberry tart and the crisp, yet soft strawberry macaroon. In fact, I think the macaroon was the nicest I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a fair few!). If you love a sweet selection and summer fruits, this is the afternoon tea for you.
Let the spa day continue
With a very satisfied tummy, it was time to return to Amala Spa to enjoy a little TLC from Comfort Zone. We started the session by completing a brief questionnaire to ascertain what we felt our current skin issues are. Then it was on to a skin analysis in order to create a detailed, prescriptive facial.
My skin was suffering with some areas of congestion and was 70% hydrated. Sonya from Comfort Zone scanned areas of my face to get an in-depth look at my skin’s structure, pores and moisture levels. It was fascinating to see how different areas of the face can be a bit neglected on even the most well cared for face.
Based on the results of the scan, Sonja then created a bespoke facial using the Comfort Zone range.
I do want to mention James’ experience with this because he has problematic skin. He suffers from eczema and his skin was incredibly inflamed on the day. On some days his own perspiration can cause terrible pain.
Sonja recommended the Comfort Zone Remedy range and as he went through the steps of the facial, you could physically see his skin becoming less raw and red. It was really quite incredible. So much so that he has since swapped completely to the full Remedy regime and in the week since he’s been using, his skin is transformed.
With our skin glowing and plumped we returned to the spa for some more rest, finishing the day with a cleansing session in the steam room and sauna.
I kind of floated back to my car in a serene daze and slept the sleep of the innocent that night. I can’t tell you how much I needed and enjoyed my spa day. A huge thank you goes out to Becky, Sonja and the amazing Hyatt team!
If you’d like to recharge your batteries with a city escape, head over to the Amala Spa website and choose the ideal day for you. You won’t regret it!
Here’s to more rest and relaxation!
